Bioremediation is a biological treatment process that uses naturally-occurring
microorganisms (yeast, fungi or bacteria) to break down complex organic molecules into
simpler non-toxic substances, resulting in partial or complete mineralization of the
pollutant.
- Microorganisms are capable of performing almost any detoxification reaction.
- Appropriate microbial cultures or a consortium of microbes are added to degrade
the pollutants and restore the eco-balance.
- Microbes are also potential candidates for the removal of biological nutrients
(Nitrogen and Phosphorus) from natural resources like ponds, lakes and rivers
